Also PLEASE do NOT write us a personality section - the personality should come across in the events you choose to focus on.

SARA LANCE WAS BORN IN STARLING CITY ON DECEMBER 25, 1987.

The youngest daughter of Quentin and Dinah Lance, Sara realized from an early age that if trouble didn't find her, she'd find trouble. What could've been seen as typical teen rebellion is likely the result of feeling like she was living in the shadow of her older sister, Laurel, the textbook definition of a golden child if there ever was one. The two sisters' relationship was (and still is) the catalyst for shaping their personalities and for the events that made them into who they are today.

As a teenager, Sara often acted out in the form of dating a lot of "delinquents", a choice that guided her into doing things like shoplifting (much to the dismay of her police officer father, who had to make the charge go away) and learning how to hotwire a car (though she'd never actually gotten into trouble for it). Her impulsiveness lead her to going so far as to try making a move on a classmate's boyfriend in high school, which brought on bullying and physical violence; while not a particularly significant event in Sara's mind now, it holds weight when thinking about the affair that would end up changing the course of her life forever. It also lead to Quentin beginning to teach Sara and Laurel how to defend themselves, a first step towards becoming the badass crime-fighting vigilantes that they become years in the future.

And then there was Oliver Queen.

It started with a silly crush on the pretty, troublemaking rich boy that everyone in Starling City knew of, considering his less than sparkling reputation. It continued with Sara sneaking out to a party that Oliver and his best friend, the equally charming and rich Tommy Merlyn, were hosting — only for it to essentially go up in flames as someone called the cops to bust up the party and Sara was arrested and grounded by her father. Naturally, Sara assumed that Laurel was the one who tipped off the police, considering that Laurel ended up dating Oliver one month later.

This would-be love triangle proved to be a recipe for disaster. While Laurel was extremely serious about she and Oliver's relationship, even going so far as to ask him to move in with her, Oliver's irresponsible party boy nature kicked in and essentially freaked out — thus leading him to pursue Sara, who was all too willing to get with the boy who she was crushing on and get back at her sister for what she'd allegedly done. The two entered into an affair behind Laurel's back, and Sara felt little remorse.

THAT TIME SARA LANCE "DIED".

As this relationship continued, Oliver invited Sara to spend a long weekend away from college aboard his family's swanky yacht, the Queen's Gambit. Feeling like she was in love with Oliver (and that maybe, just maybe, he felt the same way), she tried to dissuade Laurel from her domestic aspirations with her boyfriend, and told her mother that she was going away with him.

Of course, because nothing can ever go well, the Queen's Gambit was sabotaged by Malcolm Merlyn and began to sink — sweeping Sara away into the ocean's currents and leaving Oliver to believe her dead. The news spread throughout Starling City; her family grieved, though Laurel could never quite reconcile with what her sister had done to her, and her family fell apart.

Except Sara didn't actually drown. While hanging onto debris and trying desperately to stay alive, she was rescued by a large ship called the Amazo — if rescuing entails being thrown into a cell despite being half-naked (it's pretty unfortunate when you're wearing lingerie for ya mans and then you almost drown), freezing, and likely starving. The Amazo was led by a man named Dr. Anthony Ivo, who essentially took Sara under his wing and protected her from the cruelties of his men. Ivo's mission was to locate a serum called Mirakuru that would essentially make an ordinary man extraordinary: it would enhance strength, give heightened senses, and give regenerative abilities. Sara became like a henchman (henchwoman?) for Ivo, learning a hell of a lot about technology and biology from the doctor and being protected by him, but then assisted in torturing prisoners aboard the ship and keeping things in line. It felt, to Sara, like a fair trade off in exchange for her life.

Everything was suddenly turned on its head, her new world and way of life crashing down around her, when Oliver Queen became the Amazo's next prisoner.

Sara, conflicted between her loyalty and love for the man she'd thought was dead and her allegiance and unspoken debt to the man who'd saved her, did the best that she could to keep Oliver from mortal harm despite many threats, while simultaneously trying to appease Ivo. Rather than kill Oliver, Sara suggested that they use Oliver to help them find the Mirakuru on the island of Lian Yu, where he'd been shipwrecked.

While on the island, Sara and Oliver were essentially captured and made to give up the location of the Mirakuru, but are luckily rescued by Shado and Slade Wilson, two friends of Oliver's that he'd made on the island. Slade, who'd been previously injured, was injected with the Mirakuru by Oliver in the hopes of saving him — except it stopped his heart. Ivo then captured Sara and Shado and told Oliver that if he didn't choose who would die out of the two of them, he'd just shoot them both. In a panic, Oliver chose to save Sara and Shado was shot and killed just as Slade reawakened, which was highly inconvenient as Slade had a big ol' crush on Shado. They choose to not tell Slade the truth, for fear of what the Mirakuru serum did to his temperament.

The next spell of time spent on Lian Yu is varied between trying to locate Slade, who took the rest of the Mirakuru once he left them behind to find revenge and/or a way off of the island, and avoiding Ivo, who gave them 10 days to bring the serum to him in exchange for safe passage. One night, while Oliver slept, Sara spoke to Ivo and told him that while she thought of him as her savior for rescuing her and felt indebted to him, she couldn't stand by and watch how he tortured people — she said she's rather die than to be a part of his scheme anymore.

In all of the turmoil of the island, searching for transport, searching for and being threatened by Slade, the pair captured Ivo and Sara pointed a gun at him, ready to kill him. Oliver, however, took the gun and shot Ivo himself as he told Sara that killing irreparably changes a person, and that he didn't want that to happen to her. Before he died, Ivo told them that the Mirakuru cure was in his quarters aboard the Amazo so they could stop Slade — who'd taken control of the ship — and his murderous, vengeful rampage.

A plan was set forth to use a submarine and fire a torpedo at the ship to take Slade down. Unfortunately, Oliver left Sara on the beach where she'd hopefully be safe during this mission, except she was kidnapped by Slade and taken aboard the Amazo, imprisoned once again. Oliver tried, in vain, to save her; the two kissed and told each other that if either of them lived, they'd tell their families that they died in order to preserve the memory of the people that they used to be rather than the people that their circumstances made them into.

After a large battle with Slade and Oliver not returning in time, their compatriots on the submarine fired the planned torpedo at the Amazo and Sara and Oliver were separated once again by the sea.

THAT TIME OLIVER QUEEN WAS TOTALLY SURE THAT SARA LANCE "DIED".

Luckily for Sara, Oliver was wrong yet again about how tenacious she is and her uncanny ability to survive shipwrecks.

Sara was found on the coast of Lian Yu by Nyssa al Ghul, sent by her father, Ra's al Ghul, to that exact spot at that exact time (which is pretty significant — but we'll get back to that later). Nyssa rescued Sara and gave her refuge at Nanda Parbat, a city that homes the League of Assassins. Nyssa's father, Ra's, was the leader of this organization; Sara, feeling as though her former life was officially over, swore her allegiance to the League and began to train as an assassin with them.

While the specifics of her five years living as a member of the League of Assassins were never fully detailed, Sara adopted a new League name: Ta-er al-Asfer, the Arabic for "canary", as her father had given her one as a gift as a child that the rest of her family detested for its loud singing. Over this time, too, Sara fell in love with and began a relationship with Ra's daughter, Nyssa.

Her devotion to the League proved to have one minor crack within it: her family. Though they thought Sara dead for all these years, she couldn't help but hear stories of someone called "The Hood" back at home donning a green hood and acting as Starling City's protector — clearly Oliver, donning Shado and her father's hood. Worse, though, were the stories of something called The Undertaking, a ploy by Malcolm Merlyn to destroy the lower-class Glades section of the city via an earthquake machine in a backhanded attempt at ridding the city of crime and simultaneously killing thousands of innocents. Spurned by this event, Sara took a leave of absence from the League and returned to Starling City to check on her family.

The shame and guilt of what she'd done to her family and what she'd become in her absence kept Sara in the shadows, hiding herself from them, but she couldn't ever truly stay silent; Sara, using her League of Assassins training, a sick black suit, and a sonic device, took it upon herself to kick the asses of Starling City's finest thugs and criminals, typically those causing harm to women. In her own words, "No woman should ever suffer at the hands of men," and Sara had been through enough to believe that with her whole heart. This new blonde vigilante was dubbed the Canary — appropriate, considering her League name.

Sara evaded Oliver-as-The-Hood for as long as possible, escaping his pursuits time and time again, declaring that he couldn't handle the truth about her identity. Her efforts proved to be futile when she saved a kidnapped Laurel from some sicko, and Felicity and Oliver began to piece together her identity. Oliver was completely gobsmacked by the revelation that she did survive the Amazo, but their reunion was one hell of a relief. Sara made Oliver promise not to tell her sister or father about her, still worried about how she'd changed through the years, the things she'd done, the people she'd aligned herself with.

The two fell into a strangely comfortable routine, what with Sara staying with Oliver at the Queen mansion during daylight hours, and the Canary and the Arrow fighting crime back-to-back, weapons swapped with ease, and working together to fight crime by night. It was all fun and games for a hot second until a band of assassins from the League attacked them, sent by Ra's al Ghul to capture Sara and take her back to Nanda Parbat as she'd essentially deserted in order to check on her family; this forced her to reveal her place in the League to Oliver. Fearing for her family's safety, Sara also chose to reveal herself to her father, a heartbreaking reunion between the two ensuing; Sara wasn't quite Quentin's baby girl that he remembered anymore, but at least she was alive.

All three located and attacked the group of assassins, defeating them; Sara went so far as to mercilessly kill the small group's leader that had initiated the attacks, further shattering Oliver and Quentin's versions of the old Sara in their heads. She left a single member alive to return to Nanda Parbat and tell Ra's that her family was off limits, and made her father promise not to tell Laurel that she was alive, in a misguided but well-intended attempt at protecting her sister. Eventually, she'd decided that it would be better to leave Starling City for the sake of keeping the League away from her family.

... except, obviously, that didn't last for very long. Oliver reached out to Sara, telling her about Laurel's struggles — losing her job, falling into a depression, and trying to drown it all with alcohol. Desperate to help her sister, she returned, only for Laurel to think Sara was a hallucination in her drunken haze. It was a hard sight to bear, and Sara wrestled with the notion of revealing herself to her sister or leaving the city for good; either way, she could possibly harm Laurel even more. Quentin had another agenda, and upon finding out that Sara was back in town, insisted that she stay, despite her protestations.

And then came the arrival of Nyssa al Ghul in Starling City — and a kiss between she and Sara that revealed to Oliver the true nature of their relationship within the League. Desperate, Sara begged Nyssa to release her from the League, for the burden of killing had ripped her soul to shreds, the darkness of the act taking hold of her, but Nyssa, selfishly protective of her beloved, denied her, instead choosing to kidnap Sara's mother, Dinah, and telling Sara that she had 24 hours to return to the League or her mother would be killed in her stead.

While Team Arrow helped Sara as best as they could, their efforts proved futile in the face of the League. Not wanting to rejoin the League but not wanting to harm her family further, Sara decided to give herself up to them — except at the very last moment, she decided to poison herself as the thought of killing any more people was too much to bear, passing out in Nyssa's arms. Oliver arrived and the two fought over Sara's (alleged) death — only for Sara to drag herself awake and beg for them to stop. In a stroke of convenience, Oliver managed to provide Sara with an antidote to her poison and Nyssa, bearing the authority of the daughter of Ra's al Ghul, tearfully released Sara from the League, setting her beloved free.

All of this certainly called for a Lance family reunion, held at Laurel's apartment, which seems like it would be a great, happy ending, right? Except it wasn't; Laurel, rather than being overjoyed to see her sister alive and well like Sara felt, blamed Sara for all of the problems in the Lance family: their mother and father's divorce, their father's alcoholism, their collective grief and depression over their loss ... and she kicked Sara out. Devastated, Sara returned to Team Arrow's headquarters only to find Oliver, and naturally, the two, overwhelmed by their angst, hooked up, rekindling their old flame once more.
